After many years of renovations we saved our most challenging project for last: the master bathroom. When I first bought the house the bathroom was already in bad shape; a crumbling shower stall, a cheap vanity that was falling apart, and an uncomfortable roman tub. Recently the shower stall deteriorated to the point that water was leaking on to the floor and into the walls. We couldn't put off renovation any longer.

Renovation began July 2011, shortly after we returned from Alaska. Although we purchased all the tile and a new vanity, including two new sinks, we hired a contractor to do the work. The following was done:

• The old shower stall, roman tub, vanity, mirror, tile, toilet, and doors were removed.
• In place of the old shower stall a new closet was built.
• In place of the old roman tub a new shower stall was built.
• The windows were replaced with frosted glass panes.
• A new vanity was installed with a black granite top and vessel sinks with matching faucets.
• All new tile for the floor, shower stall, and partway up each wall.
• A new beige water saving toilet.
• All new wooden doors that we stained and varnished.
• The old hot incandescent flood lamps were replaced with new LED flood lamps.
• New individual tilting mirrors were installed.
• While the plumbing was exposed and the walls were open a line was run through the wall to the patio for a new faucet.
